Sheldon Schnese is known in the nicest possible way as “the old man” among the Colorado Springs Police Department’s motorcycle unit.
He’s 63 and he retires in April. It’s been a 40-year career for the man who was one of the city’s original SWAT team members back in the 70’s when they used patrol cars and supplied their own weapons. He’s gotten used to razzing from colleagues who ask him about crime fighting in the old west.
“I’ll miss the camaraderie with these guys,” he said. “They always call me the old man.”
Before he rides into the sunset on his two-wheeled steed — a roar from his personal Harley and he’s gone — he has a few weeks left on a Honda for the 20-member police unit. He’s a motorcycle guy.
