A veteran Capital Region chef takes the deli path in Troy

First the building at 689 Hoosick Road was home to Maselli's. Then it was home to Terry's Kitchen. Now, it is home to Chef’s Deli & More, which will today announced it will hold its grand opening on Monday, May 5.

The venture has been in soft-opening mode since March 27 on Route 7 near the Brunswick-Troy line in Rensselaer County. It is an undertaking from the husband-wife team of James G. Rhoads III and Linda Rhoads.

James's background is quite different from that of the usual deli operator. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, and has been a restaurant owner and has work experience in hotels, restaurants, and private clubs for more than 25 years. He has taught cooking at Schenectady County Community College and retired in June 2011 after 17 years as a culinary arts instructor at the Questar III Career and Technical School. He was twice named chef of the year by the Capital District chapter of the American Culinary Federation and was awarded an ACF lifetime achievement award in 2011.

Linda has a background in finance and event management. The Siena College graduate has more than two decades' experience in healthcare finance combined with 13 years' experience in event management.

Together, they also own the catering and personal-chef firm Chef’s Solutions. Among other activities, the business provides concierge services to residents of the Eastwyck Village retirement community. While James handles all the food efforts, Linda is responsible for management functions for Chef’s Solutions.

For the Chef's Deli & More grand opening, special tastings and other festivities are planned. The menu will have, in addition to the expected sandwiches, salads and soups, such entrees as shrimp mac 'n' cheese, pot pies, parmagiana dishes and other specialty items.
