On Monday, August 8th at 6:30 pm, the Vertical Focus Home School Drum Band will perform at Broome County Public Library.
The Vertical Focus Steel Drum Band is a group of young talented steel drummers, under the leadership of Director Joel Smales. Weather permitting, the live performance will be held in the Library Garden. However, if there is inclement weather, then the band will entertain in the Library’s Decker Room.
BCPL is also giving teens the opportunity to learn how to play the steel drum! On Thursday, August 11th the members of the Vertical Focus Steel Drum Band, along with director Joel Smales, will teach the fundamentals of steel drumming.
Learn the basics of steel drumming, for instance, did you know that another name for a steel drum is ‘steel pan’, and the art of steel drumming originated in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago? The ‘pan’ is part of the idiophone family of instruments; idiophone meaning, an instrument which creates sound by the way it vibrates without the use of strings or membranes. The ‘pan’ is struck or played by rubber tipped sticks! These instruments are so unique; this will be an opportunity of a life time you won't want to miss!
Remember, in order to participate in this workshop, you must register beforehand. For more information, contact the Youth Department at teen@bclibrary.info or call 607-778-6456.
Happy Drumming!
