A "Veronica Mars" movie is in the works thanks to a "Veronica Mars" Kickstarter fund, reported CBS on March 14. A campaign on the crowd funding site to bring the cult TV series, created by Rob Thomas and starring Kristen Bell, to the big screen, hit $1 million in 4 hours and 24 minutes, the fastest ever. The project, with a goal of $2 million, is also the most funded to date with over $2 million pledged as of this writing. The campaign began on March 13 and ends on April 12.
As seen at the crowd funding site, "Almost since 'Veronica Mars' went off the air, there's been talk of making a movie. In that span, I've taken different tactics in dealing with the question of whether it might happen. To be clear, I've always wanted to make a 'Veronica Mars' movie. I love writing these characters and working with these actors. Kristen Bell has always wanted to make the movie," said Thomas.
In the TV teen drama series, actress Bell, 32, played Veronica Mars, a student who moonlights as a private investigator. The series ran from 2004 to 2007.
Tweeted Kristen on March 13, "dear pope: Im sorry VM fans stole ur thunder on ur 1st day. I mean, Im not really that sorry, but i thought it would be polite 2 say so. xo."
"My mind is blown. I've been fantasizing about this and had to tell myself, 'Stop it, Rob, you're being silly. You're setting yourself up for disappointment,'" said Thomas. "And now today has exceeded the wildest pipe dream I let myself entertain. Holy cow. We better make a good movie. These amazing fans have stepped up. We better deliver."
As seen at the website of the screenwriter and producer, "Veronica Mars" was supposed to be a sixth young adult novel for Simon and Schuster. However, writing for television and film sidetracked Thomas' fiction career. Thomas reports it takes him months to write a novel, but only weeks to write a TV script, and TV scripts pay him more than novels.
Kristen Bell currently stars in "House of Lies" with Don Cheadle.
