It’s been an exciting year for Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas, creator of “Veronica Mars.” The duo launched a KickStarter campaign to raise funds for a movie and not only met, but hugely exceeded their goal. Thomas announced in a Dec. 31 email to campaign backers that the movie is already winning awards: Variety has chosen the “Veronica Mars” movie as one of the Breakthrough of the Year Award recipients.

Variety’s 2014 awards show will be held on Jan. 9, 2014. It will be hosted by Nick Cannon. It is to celebrate those who have excelled in sports, music, social media, film, TV, comedy, technology and philanthropy.

Veronica Mars” was a TV show about a teenage private investigator that ran from 2004-2007. The shows cast jumped to the challenge of helping Thomas raise the funds for the movie – a film fans were very vocal about wanting to see happen. Star Kristen Bell led the charge.

The movie opens March 14, 2014.
