A lot of TV show creators try to get their shows onto the big screen after it is cancelled or ends (“Entourage”), but they don’t always succeed (take “24” for example”).
Well the creator of “Veronica Mars,” Rob Thomas, thought of an ingenious way to secure studio funding.
He and star Kristen Bell (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) created a Kickstarter campaign to help fund their long in the works film treatment, and they said if within 30 days they could raise $2 million then the studio would green-light the film, and it would be made.
In less than 24 hours since the Kickstarter account has gone online they have received more than $3 million and the film is now considered a go.
While I don’t understand the fascination with this show (I’ve never seen it) I think it is really great that the fans had a chance to be a part of getting the movie made, and think of what this might mean for future films.
I know I would personally donate to a Kickstarter for another “Spawn” movie, and there are many other cult followed creative properties that would find the same success.
This is the way of the future; movies for us by us.
