The 49ers were struggling on all phases in a 27-7 loss to the Colts, but one of the problems was the WR corps. The passing game became dead when Vernon Davis was ruled out for the game with a hamstring injury and the Colts were able to solve everything in the air attack.
There is currently no supporting cast behind Davis and veteran WR Anquan Boldin.
Boldin had five receptions for 67 receiving yards, but it was the only production from wide receivers. Colin Kaepernick ended up completing only 13 passes the entire game with five of them to Boldin. Quinton Patton and Marlon Moore were on the field, but were only targeted once. It wasn't until garbage time where Kaepernick added four completions with late passes to Kyle Williams and Garrett Celek.
The 49ers couldn't get open which led to Kaepernick trying to scramble for yardage. He was successful on a 24-yard run in the first half, but that was it. The Colts were ready to swarm on the quarterback whenever he was about to run. There was one notable tackle on third and four where safety Antoine Bethea ended up coming from the secondary and tackling Kaepernick short of the first down markers.
For the Colts passing defense, everything became predictable when the 49ers tried to go to Anquan Boldin and Kaepernick ended up being sacked three times. Two of them were coverage sacks while the other was good tackling off a blitz.
This was a game the 49ers young receivers needed to step up from and they failed to do so miserably. Williams had his first reception of the game with less than two minutes to go in garbage time. Moore, who had a respectable training camp to earn his spot on the roster, ended up being invisible for the game as he was targeted only once. Quinton Patton was also targeted once and not utilized on any catch and runs.
The 49ers were trying to get more from the passing game, but it was a mistake to not run the ball more. Receivers were exposed against good coverage and Kaepernick couldn't complete many passes.
The injuries to Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis showed how valuable they are to the team. If it weren't for Boldin, the 49ers don't have any threat in the passing game and it was foolish to abandon the ground. Crabtree and Davis, get well soon.
