'Year of No Sugar' chronicles a family's year on sugar-free detox diet

Writer Eve Schaub and her family adopted a sugar-free diet for one year and have never felt better, USA Today reported Sunday. Schaub, 43, decided to put her husband and two daughters on a sugar-free diet after watching Dr. Robert Lustig's video "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" in 2010 (see above).

Dr. Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist, said sugar is a drug that's as addictive as cocaine. Lustig said sugar causes weight gain, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's and every other degenerative disease known to man. These alarming revelations scared Schaub.

"Sugar is made up roughly of half glucose, half fructose," said Eve. "And fructose is the bad stuff. It's the part our body can't process, that turns into fat and results in terrible things happening in our body."

'Sugar Is the Most Dangerous Drug of Our Time'

Eve chronicled her family's sugar-free adventure in her book, A Year Of No Sugar. Not surprisingly, Schaub's daughters and husband weren't thrilled with the idea of not eating any sugar for an entire year, but they made the adjustment fairly well after a rocky start.

Eve didn't experience any weight loss on her sugar-free diet, but said she felt more energetic, happier and healthier after kicking the sugar habit. She noted that her two daughters, ages 6 and 11, also got sick less frequently during that year.

The one shocking discovery Schaub made was how much sugar there is secretly lurking in common foods, like chicken broth, mayonnaise, and cold cuts. That's when she came to the shocking realization that we may all be secretly addicted to sugar.

"Sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine,” said Dr. Mark Hyman, author of the 10-Day Detox Diet. "Sugar is the new nicotine. Sugar is the new fat — except fat is not addictive in the way that sugar is. And worse, sugar actually causes diabetes and obesity.”

'Sugar Is Devastating For the Brain'

Many medical experts are convinced that sugar has no redeeming health benefit. Neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter, author of Grain Brain, told me a high-carb diet — particularly one that's high in sugar — contributes to ADHD, dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

"Carbs are devastating for the brain," said Dr. Perlmutter, who himself follows a low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet. "The brain thrives on a fat-rich low-carb diet. Even slight elevations in blood sugar have been shown to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease."

Perlmutter joins a growing list of medical experts who are sold on the health benefits of a sugar-free, low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet, which has been shown to produce rapid weight loss, reverse diabetes and heart disease, and manage epilepsy and depression.

Dr. Jeff Volek, a dietitian and professor at the University of Connecticut, told me consuming a low-carb diet high in unprocessed saturated fat protects the brain, reverses type 2 diabetes, and accelerates weight loss. "There are very few people that a ketogenic diet could not help," said Volek, author of the Art and Science of Low-Carbohydrate Living.
