Verizon Wireless had a temporary site FUBAR over the weekend, one that allowed customers to upgrade their devices at "subsidized prices" without losing their unlimited data plans. The bad news is they have already fixed it. The good news is that the company said on Monday (through Engadget) that it will allow those who managed to sneak in during the issue to keep their unlimited data plans.
Some, however, may have seen their orders cancelled, and for those, there's no recourse. Those whose orders have continued in the workflow will get the upgrade pricing for their new devices and still keep their unlimited data plans. Here's what Verizon had to say about the issue:
Over the past weekend, there was a software issue involving some orders for customers seeking to upgrade their devices. A number of customers who were upgrading devices were able to maintain an unlimited monthly data feature while paying a subsidized price.
Verizon Wireless will honor those orders that were approved this past weekend, allowing those customers to retain their unlimited plans for the duration of their contract and receive their new device.
Verizon Wireless corrected this software issue today (9/30). The company no longer offers unlimited data plans and customers who want to retain existing unlimited data plans, must pay full retail price for a replacement phone.
Those who don't understand any of the above should remember that Verizon Wireless changed its terms back in mid-2012. Anyone who opted to upgrade to a new phone at subsidized pricing would be forced into one of Verizon's Share Everything plans, eliminating their grandfathered unlimited data plans.
When making such a selection (for a subsidized phone) on Verizon's website, a customer would be forced to choose one of the new "limited" data plans. The software problem, naturally, was something running on their site or on their servers that forced the workflow to go in that direction.
Many would have preferred that Verizon continue the "promotion," but there is obviously no going back.
