Venus in Fur, opens The Unicorn Theatre’s 2013-14 season, with previews beginning Sept. 4 in preparation for the play's official opening Sept. 7 with performance times varied throughout the run to accommodate for weeknights, weekend nights, and Sunday matinees.
Vanessa Severo as Vanda and Rusty Sneary as Thomas plan to create a steamy start to the Unicorn’s 40th consecutive season of bold, provocative plays. Venus in Fur heats up Unicorn Theatre’s Jerome Stage located at 3828 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64111. The show runs Sept. 4-29, 2013.
Directed by Cynthia Levin, producing artistic director of The Unicorn Theatre, Venus in Fur, written by David Ives, creates a mysterious, funny, and sexy start to Unicorn Theatre’s 40th Season.
“Thomas, a playwright and first-time director, is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic erotic novel Venus in Fur. Into his empty audition room walks an eccentric and equally desperate actress—“coincidentally” enough, named Vanda. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas' interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win” a press release said.
Venus in Fur performances run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 pm, Friday and Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 3pm. Talk back performances, where patrons are encouraged to stay after the show and discuss the play with the actors and director, are scheduled for September 10, 15, & 22, Levin said.
