President Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, is near death as he continues to undergo treatment approximately two months after his last cancer surgery, CBS News reported on March 1.
Vice President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, told the people that Chavez “is battling there for his health, for his life, and we’re accompanying him.” Maduro has asked that Venezuelans continue to pray for Hugo Chavez and to “remain loyal to the president.” Vice President Maduro said that Chavez’s health had suffered because he [Hugo Chavez] had “dedicated himself body and soul” to his work as president.
President Chavez’s cancer was announced in June 2011 and since then Hugo Chavez has undergone surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Chavez underwent cancer surgery in Cuba in December 2012, and has not spoken publicly since then. President Chavez returned to Venezuela on Feb. 18 to undergo more treatment at a military hospital in Caracas.
No specific details have been given on the type of cancer for which Chavez has been treated, or the exact location of the president’s pelvic region where the cancerous tumors have been removed.
Hugo Chavez was elected president of Venezuela in 1998 and assumed office in February 1999. Since his election, Chavez has been accused of “severe election” fraud, which some say is the only reason Chavez has been re-elected to the office.
When the leftist dictator assumed power he began imposing what he called “socialism of the 21st century” and aligned himself with terrorist regimes in Iran.
