The annual Venetian Night festival in the City of Chicago will be on July 25, 2009, with a theme of “Hollywood on the Lake.” The event kicks off at 8 pm with a reenactment by the Chicago Fire Department's Air/Sea Rescue Re-
enactment. The boat parade will begin at 8:15 pm. After the parade of decorated boats will be a fireworks spectacular synchronized to classic theme music from classic movies.
“Hollywood on the Lake” will be brought to life as boats will be decorated with lights and props as they sail along beautiful Lake Michigan, between the Shedd Aquarium at Roosevelt Road and the Chicago Yacht Club at Monroe Street.
Venetian Nights is Chicago's longest running special event. At one time the show ran over multiple days, but it is now a one night community event, which is free to the public.
“Venetian Night is one of the most popular events the city produces,” said Megan McDonald, Executive Director with the Mayor’s Office of Special Events. “It’s a great way to showcase our beautiful lakefront and draws people of all ages.”
This year there will be a new act joining the traditional happenings at Venetian Night. On Saturday, July 25 at 6 p.m.
on Butler Field, motorcross superstar Ronnie Renner will go sky-high in an attempt to break his own Guinness World Record for the highest air ever attained on a motorcycle at Red Bull High Rise. Renner will attempt to beat his previous record of 59 feet, 2 inches set in July, 2008 by launching onto a massive custom-built steel landing ramp measuring 64 feet wide and 30 feet tall.
The air/sea rescue re-enactment will take place at the Queen’s Landing located at Congress and the Lakefront in Grant Park. The parade of decorated and lighted boats starts at 8:15 pm. Fireworks will light the skies over the Lake Michigan lakefront at 9:00 pm.
The popular event attracts a crowd, so it is a good idea to arrive early for a good spot to view the show. People of all ages stake out spots along the lakefront as early as 9 a.m. to ensure a good view of the event. Public transportation is encouraged to avoid traffic tie ups.
