Around the globe; substance abuse has become a major problem in every aspect of life' from personal finances and employability to law enforcement and safety of the public. Venango County Pennsylvania is no exception to the rule. Regardless of where you go and what activity you are involved in at any given time; drugs are there somewhere. The workers blame those who receive welfare, those on welfare blame the workers, and the politicians play both sides against each other in the name of votes and power.

There are those though who take no sides; their only purpose and desire is to make a difference, to take a huge bite out of the substance abuse problem; and to help those who are affected by this global evil weather they are the abuser or someone affected in some way by the abuser to get back some sense of normalcy in their lives. What these people and organizations do has nothing to do with politics, pay, or poverty; it is about love, compassion, and human service.

One such organization is Family Services & Children's Aid Society on East Second Street in Oil City, Pennsylvania.

Strengthening families since 1887; Family Service & Children's Aid Society's is committed to serving youth and adult alcohol and/or drug dependent individuals and their families. One goal with their substance abuse program is to strengthen families and individuals in living their lives free of substance abuse by building on existing, personal, and family strengths, and educating them on how to reduce emotional and environmental triggers. The program offers reliable information to area residents and their children and local schools for prevention, and treatment for those in the county affected by substance abuse, dependence, and/or addiction.

Family Service & Children's Aid Society understands that the ability to maintain a life in abstinence is dependent on the ability of the family unit to understand the impact the disease has had on their relationship with the substance abuser and the families own importance in helping their loved one learn to function properly in spite of the hold of the substance. This is why all drug and alcohol treatment is based on a family systems perspective.

Family Service & Children's Aid Society offers a wide variety of services.

outpatient program - provides a safe and confidential environment where issues of alcohol and other drug abuse or addiction issues are addressed. Treatment is conducted by trained professional addictions therapists. Treatment can involve anything from group, individual, and family sessions to involvement in a 12-Stepprogram and finding a sponsor to assist and guide the client in these efforts.

Vision Quest and Pathways - Family Service & Children's Aid Society has teamed with Vision Quest and Pathways to provide services to area youth in a more structured residential setting.

Jail Program - In cooperation with the Venango County Substance Abuse Program and Venango County Jail, Family Service & Children's Aid staff provides an in-jail drug abuse program while persons are incarcerated. This is followed by community-based continuing care and treatment programs. This program has been credited with reducing relapse rates once released from jail.
