Veggie milks are a great alternative to yogurt

There are a lot of people interested in the nutritional value of veggie milks which have been appearing more often in the supermarkets these days. Plant based or vegetable milks are an alternative to conventional yogurts, reported Asociación RUVID, via AlphaGalileo on Jan. 3, 2014. The non dairy milk products are specially developed for people who have allergies to cow's milk, lactose or gluten intolerance, as well as children and pregnant women.

Researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de València and the University College of Dublin have been investigating new products which are fermented with probiotic bacteria from grains and nuts. These are known as plant based or vegetable milks and are an alternative to conventional yogurts. These researchers have worked with almonds, oats and hazelnuts. They will and soon also be evaluating the use of walnuts and chestnuts as raw materials for these new products.

In vitro studies which have been done show how some of these products developed have anti-inflammatory properties in intestine cells. This could alleviate allergic reactions caused by food while increasing the bioavailability of iron. The caseins which are in cow's milk as well as being on the list of allergens components, also undermine the absorption of iron. Chelo González, a researcher at the Universitat Politècnica de València, has said, "The results we have obtained also show that the milks studied are a good matrix for the growth and viability of probiotic bacteria for the lifetime of the product, especially after their intake."

Also, the consumption of dairy products has been linked to many health problems, including an increased risk of ovarian and prostate cancers, ear infections and diabetes.

It's therefore good to see plant based milks can provide a convenient and healthy alternative to cow’s milk. There are a lot of good choices for these products on the market which you may want to check out, including vegetable milks made from soy, almond, hemp, coconut, rice milks, and others. It's certainly worth giving these alternative veggie milks a try. They really are aside from being nutritious, also delicious.
