A new month and year are upon us, and with them come a new series. Every month, I'll share a list of veggie and vegan-friendly food holidays and publish articles and recipes celebrating the holiday with you.
The end of the holiday season does not mean the end of celebrations. Foodies, this month is full of vegetarian and vegan-friendly holidays and observances that are delicious, tempting, healthy, or all of the above.
January marks the beginning of a healthier lifestyle for many, so the observance of Fat Free Living Month is not a surprise. In general, healthy, comforting foods make up the bulk of this month's food celebrations. It is National Oatmeal Month, Hot Tea, Soup, and Slow Cooking Month. I see breakfast, lunch, and dinner right there. By the way, setting up oatmeal in the slow cooker the night before makes for a quick, easy, and hearty breakfast.
Not all of the daily food observances are veggie friendly, but many of them are. National Bloody Mary, Cream Puff , Chocolate Covered Cherry, Spaghetti, Whipped Cream Day, Shortbread, Bean, Tempura, and Fruitcake Toss Days have passed by, but there are days of plenty left in the month and each highlights a different food item. Recipe suggestions are provided for some non-veggie days.
