Bloomington is one of the most culturally-diverse cities in the Midwest. The restaurant business in town is no exception and embraces all types of diets and cuisines. Most eateries in town offer vegetarian options, but here are the places in town that shun meat and cater to vegetarians exclusively.
- Roots on the Square (124 North Walnut Street)
Known far and wide for their craving-busting sweet potato fries, Roots on the Square (known locally as just "Roots") serves up juice and entree creations to make even the most hardcore carnivore question their meat-loving. As their title suggests, Roots is located on the courthouse square, convenient to downtown shops, hotels and attractions. - The Owlery Restaurant (212 South Rogers Street)
New to the restaurant scene, The Owlery has made a big splash in only a few months with their decadant vegan desserts, creative entrees and best-in-town beer specials. One of the favorite meals of locals is the Philly Cheesesteak (made with Seitan), a cold pint of Upland Wheat Ale, and vegan Mississippi Mud Cake for dessert. - Laughing Planet Cafe (322 East Kirkwood Avenue)
While Laughing Planet dabbles in the meat arts as well, they are known far and wide for their massive, creative and flavorful vegetarian burritos. The funky eatery, perched above the central avenue through town, is packed with locals and tourists alike testing out creative concotions like Jimmy the Greek burrito (brown rice, black beans, tomatoes, onions, feta cheese, kalamata olives and fresh steamed spinach) or the Thai-Me-Up burrito (organic brown rice, bok choy, napa cabbage, carrots, snow peas, broccoli, celery and bamboo shoots). There is also a burrito of the day that is created on the whim of the chef.
