Just four blocks from the L.A. Convention Center, beneath the City Target at 7th and Figueroa, vegetarian food awaits. Tucked away in a humble food court, vegetable lovers can find an excellent lunch at Indus by Saffron.
Indus has quite a few good veg dishes. You can get two curries and rice for $8.45. If you’d rather have salad than rice, they’ll swap it. Or for another dollar, you can get vegetables instead of rice. The server seemed proud that they had found a good brown rice supplier. He pointed out that Indian restaurants don’t usually have brown rice. Turns out brown rice goes well with vegetarian dishes like chana masala and peeli dahl.
Cilantro and a few chopped onions topped the chana masala. The dahl was mild, yellow, wholesome tasting and not at all greasy. Next to the tub of hot sauce was a warning sign that the hot sauce was actually hot. That’s what they all say, but this time it was true! Unless you are a hot sauce devotee, beware! The mint sauce mixed with brown rice provided a good counterpoint to the heat.
