Vegetable garden planting alert by college; And did you sign up for free seeds?

On Sunday Louisiana State University's AgCenter again sounded the alert that it is time to start planting the spring vegetable garden, according to the Daily Comet. And Farmer John of the Sustainable Seed Company is backing them up with his own reminder that March is the time to start thinking about which flower and vegetable seeds you will plant this year.

John told this examiner that "now is the time when everyone wants to plant seed." And to help those gardeners along, Farmer John's company is offering a Pin-It to Win-It seed contest on Pinterest.com through March 15, which gives flower and vegetable growers one more week to try and win some free seeds.

To enter the free garden seed contest just follow these four simple steps:

  1. Follow the company on Pinterest.com/sscfarmerjohn/
  2. Create a new board on your Pinterest.com account and title it "My Dream Garden"
  3. Pin a minimum of 10 products from the SustainableSeedCo.com website to the new board and add a brief description for each pinned photo
  4. Email a link of the new board to Pinit@sustainableseedco.com

Sustainable Seed Co. will be giving away $500 worth of free seeds altogether, with 10 lucky gardening enthusiasts winning $50 of free seeds each. Winners will be announced on Saturday, March 16 on Sustainable Seed Company's Facebook page, so there's no time to lose if you want to enter and win.

LSU said that it is near ideal time to start your garden this year, and for those who plan to direct plant in the month of March, at least in Louisiana, they should consider the following crops: broccoli, cabbage, collards, radish, lettuce, mustard, snap beans, Swiss chard, sweet corn seeds, and turnips.

Farmer John says he's got all that and much more, including 300 different tomatoes, 200 varieties of grains, and 47 kinds of watermelon, as well as cover crop seeds and a complete Heirloom seed collection too.
