Brendan Brazier is a best-selling author and former Ironman triathlete who credits a vegan diet for enhancing his athletic performance and helping him enjoy optimal health.

In an exclusive interview, Brendan said he has been following a vegan diet for the past 24 years.

While some people become vegan for environmental or animal-rights reasons, Brazier, 38, was initially motivated by a desire to become the best triathlete he could be.

"I was trying to be a better athlete," said the Canadian endurance phenom. "I found I was able to recover from my training sessions much more quickly on a vegan diet."

Brazier, a former professional Ironman triathlete (1998 to 2004), got amazing results on his plant-based diet, and is a two-time Canadian 50km Ultra-Marathon champion.

After he retired from professional racing, Brendan created an award-winning line of whole-food nutritional products called VEGA, and wrote the best-selling health book, Thrive Fitness.

Brazier is now an advocate for plant-based living and offers health and fitness advice through Thrive Forward, a free, personalized nutrition program.

Brendan, who has coached actor Hugh Jackman and singer Moby on the health benefits of a plant-based diet, has just released his new vegan cookbook, the Thrive Energy Cookbook.

Brazier is pleased that the vegan diet he once embraced to enhance his athletic performance is also the eating plan he feels is best for his health and for the world around him.

"True activism means hand-selecting your own food for a healthier you and a healthier planet," he said. "Eating a plant-based diet composed of whole foods is not only stress-reducing and health-boosting, it's the best health insurance money can buy."
