Terming herself 80 percent vegan, Alanis Morissette believes strongly in the benefits of holistic food choices. In a recent interview with Energy Times, the "Guardian" singer praised well-known plant-based diet expert Dr. Joel Furhman for serving as her catalyst in transforming her life with his "Eat to Live" diet program.
"I’m very aware of food as medicine. My son is vegan and I’m about 80% vegan," she says. She credits her diet guru Dr. Fuhrman, author of "Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss" and "Eat for Health," for raising her awareness of how to use food to enhance health. Dr. Fuhrman is "really explicit on every nutrient and phytochemical found within the foods we eat," says Alanis. "I started viewing food as this sacred fuel that has to be delicious because sensuality is paramount to me. So if there is a perception of a plant-based diet just being seeds and berries, which by the way is not a terrible thing, but if the perception is that having a plant-based diet is somehow not delicious, we might benefit from throwing that on its head a little bit so we can get a little more creative in the kitchen and actually have veganism or a plant-based diet be identified more with deliciousness and sensuality."
The music superstar lost 20 pounds after going vegan, according to Harper's. In addition, after shifting to the diet featured in "Eat to Live: The Amazing Nutrient-Rich Program for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, Revised Edition," she says that she is "back to what I was born to be, at my best. … I feel very alive. … I have no more aches and pains, and my allergies are gone, too." Discussing her diet with E! News, Dr. Fuhrman explained: "You can't be on a diet with a load of animal products – that's just going to be unhealthy." By shifting to his nutrient-rich plan, "it's not just feeling better physically it's feeling better emotionally and mentally."
