A vegan who is dedicated to animal rights, Pamela also has become involved in helping alleviate the poverty-stricken problems of Haiti.
"I'm running the New York Marathon this year and raising funds for the J/P Haitian Relief Organization," tweeted Pamela on September 29. A link to her fundraising page provides more information.
"Together, I hope we can raise at least $500,000 and make a huge impact in this magical country," wrote Pamela. "Keep checking my page and Facebook and Twitter to find out about all sorts of contests I'll be running from now until November -- I will give updates on my training too."
And the training required for a marathon is significant. Although Pamela follows a healthy vegan diet, she confessed to the New York Daily News that she hasn't actually "attacked the running thing. I've never been a runner. I've never even run across the street hardly before," she said.
However, to get the endurance level required to run the more than 26 miles involved, Pamela has been working out on a Stairmaster and elliptical. She previously has not competed in races but did compete in "Dancing with the Stars."
Contradicting those who might think she's not up to a full marathon, Pamela said, "People think I'm crazy. ... I like to do things that people think maybe I can't do, and this is definitely one of those things," she said. "You know, somehow I learned to dance, learned to skate, and all these things that people thought I couldn't do. Now, I'm running a marathon."
The organization that Pamela is supporting was co-founded by Sean Penn. Its goal is to bring sustainable programs to the Haiti following the earthquake of 2010.
