One of the hardest food items for a vegan to let go of is milk. People use milk to cook with, in cereal, and to drink. The commercials all tell us without drinking milk, we cannot possibly get the calcium we need, right?
Or can we?
There are many options for non-dairy milk that are perfectly safe and have as much calcium as dairy if not more in some cases. They are all safe to drink for children as young as one years old, possibly younger with a doctor approval.
Almond milk is by far the most popular. It can be purchased in unsweetened, vanilla or chocolate varieties. Most children love the taste of almond milk. It is relatively inexpensive, or comparable to dairy milk, respectively. Almond milk is sold by many store brands and by the brand Silk.
Soy milk is another popular choice. Soy milk has a pleasing taste that when added to recipes or cereal will not taste much different than cow’s milk. It has been discouraged in recent years, due to the soy bean being one of the main plants that are part of the GMO umbrella. Soy milk also comes in light, vanilla and chocolate. Silk is one of the most popular brands that sells soy milk.
Rice milk is growing in popularity. It is often cheaper than the other two options. It comes in vanilla, unsweetened or chocolate. It has a very thin consistency, and best not to be used in cooking.
The last popular milk is coconut milk. This milk has a very creamy consistency and has been used in Asian dishes for decades. This variety is becoming so popular. It is so popular, not only are they making milk, but yogurt and ice cream as well. It is so popular because those who are allergic to nuts can drink this milk. The common brands to find at the grocery store are So Delicious and Silk.
Vegans are able to find milk alternatives. It may take some experimenting to find which milk, you prefer. When you find the one you prefer, you can start to enjoy your favorite comfort foods like cereal and homemade cookies, again.
