Beyonce and husband Jay-Z have been following a vegan diet since the beginning of December and are enjoying delicious foods like vegan pizza, meatballs and peanut-butter pie.
Vegan health expert Karyn Calabrese said Beyonce and Jay-Z ordered vegan pasta and meatballs, pizza, chili, potato soup, and peanut-butter pie at her Chicago restaurant, Karyn’s Cooked, and loved their meal.
“Blue Ivy was sticking her little fingers in her plate. She was precious!” Calabrese told HollywoodTake Dec. 21. Calabrase said Beyonce was also sweet and gracious to fans.
One table of girls asked Beyoncé's guards if they could take a picture. They were so polite, not mega-star like. We had Lady Gaga in last year, too, and she was nice. But Beyoncé and her people were just unbelievable.”
Beyonce and Jay-Z started a 22-day vegan diet on Dec. 3, and have three days left on their plant-based eating plan. On his blog, Jay-Z cited a desire for a "spiritual and physical cleanse" for the dietary overhaul.
This all began a few months back when a good friend and vegan challenged me to embrace a 'plant-based breakfast' everyday. It was surprisingly easier on me than I thought ... So you can call it a spiritual and physical cleanse."
Jay-Z said he's not sure if he will stay vegan after his 22-day challenge is up, but he's feeling good so far. This isn't the first time Beyonce has dabbled with the vegan diet.
Beyonce, who lost 57 pounds several months after giving birth to daughter Blue Ivy, said she maintains her weight loss by eating one vegan meal a day.
Beyoncé snacks on edamame, a green apple, or cucumbers sprinkled with vinegar, cayenne pepper and lemon. She also works out almost every day, combining cardio exercise with strength-training.
Meanwhile, Calabrese hopes Beyonce and Jay-Z's vegan experiment will convince them to stop eating meat completely. “If Beyoncé and Jay Z stick to this diet it might not be so easy to go back to dead flesh,” she said.
Calabrese, 66, said her health improved dramatically after she stopped eating chicken, red meat, and dairy over four decades ago.
“I have an increase in energy," she said. "I’m never tired. I haven’t been sick in over 40 years. I went through menopause with no symptoms. I wear the same clothes I wore in high school and college.”
Calabrese also hopes more people will embrace the vegan diet now that superstars like Beyonce have brought worldwide attention to it. “I think more mainstream people are getting involved like Beyoncé, [so] it will bring a different thinking.”
