Police are investigating the incident to determine why the 20-year-old man would set himself on fire inside a Richmond apartment. It was determined later that person is a Virginia Commonwealth University student whose roommate said he just snapped.
Police responded to a violent domestic situation in the 1800 block of W. Grace Street near VCU. Moments after three officers entered the upstairs apartment, a man doused himself with some kind of fluid, then set himself on fire with a lighter.
One officer ran to his cruiser to get a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.
The man who set himself on fire is now in the hospital with life-threatening injuries to his upper body.
The three police officers who responded to the incident were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
The incident remains under investigation; however, as of now no charges will be filed.
