Camping doesn't just mean boy scouts and hardcore survivalists. What about belly dancing gypsies, mad scientists and Edwardians with a taste for the Gorey? If you love open air and can't wait for Edwardian Ball 2014, get your camping gear together and load up your steampunk finery for the weekend of Sept. 19-23 and head on up to Woodward Reservoir Regional Park in NorCal for some well-dressed fun that includes music, cirque theatre and comedy, large- scale art installations, gourmet organic food, yoga and dance classes on 19 areas with four main stages and a kids area.
This is brought to you by the mad scientists behind the Pyramid Eclipse in Australia. This event is the Symbiosis Gathering 2013 (#SG13). The five-day camping festival features a massive lineup over four main stages playing a diverse array of live and electronic music, global and galactic bass, house, gypsy, sacred and world fusion. The gathering coincides with the Harvest Full Moon, the Autumnal Equinox and the International Day of Peace. Who doesn't want to celebrate autumn, the Harvest Full Moon and International Day of Peace. Give peace a chance but with more style than your average 1970s hippies.
While the San Francisco Edwardian Ball is a two-day event and the Los Angeles Edwardian Ball is a one-day event, Symbiosis Gathering is five days of fun. That's like a work-week, but much, much more fun. Imagine immersing yourself for five days in an alternate reality teeming with mesmerizing musical performances, cutting edge entertainment (including the first ever Edwardian Ball Roadshow), transformational workshops, a diverse array of yoga and dance classes, world-renowned visual arts and large-scale art installations and ancient wisdom teachings This is an experience of green living in action backdropped by the crystal waters of the surrounding lake which attendees can swim in.
This year, the main stage will have a beautiful original design courtesy of Josh Flemming, one of the founders of The Do LaB and Lightning in a Bottle music and arts festival, who are internationally-renowned for their ability to create awe inspiring installations that blur the line between a work of art and a fully functioning stage. Now when we say, stage, we really mean a transitory castle.
Just announced headliners include ambient techno/trance project Shpongle and iconic electro jam band STS9, joining over 200 cutting edge musical acts from around the world, including the much anticipated US debut of Iamamiwhoami, smooth electro-pop outfit Poliça, post-dubstep mastermind Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice of TNGHT, the celestial R&B of Active Child, the hard hitting RL Grime, Popof, and Brodinski as well as San Francisco House pioneer DJ Garth, English producer and breakbeat pioneer Adam Freeland, retro-electronic producer Star Slinger, Chet Faker, avant-cabaret troupe Vau de Vire Society, remix wizard Ryan Hemsworth, the eclectic bass sounds of Gaudi, Random Rab and Emancipator, plus many more.
Vau de Vire Society will be performing Friday and Saturday. The Edwardian Ball Roadshow will be on stage on Sunday. For those unfamiliar with Vau de Vire, they are a group that includes classically trained dancers, acrobats, aerial artists, contortionists, circus sideshow acts and fire performers. The husband and wife team of Mike Gaines and Shannon Gaines founded the San Francisco-based Vau de Vire in 1997.
Vau de Vire is best known to Los Angeles as the creators and co-hosts (with Rosin Coven) of the magnificent and in San Francisco, legendary, Edwardian Ball. The ball has come to Los Angeles and now is on the road. The Edwardian Ball Roadshow sets sail on its maiden voyage LIVE at Symbiosis Gathering 2013 – enter into an immersive, magical world of theatrical entertainment with an eccentric assortment of music, aerial acrobatics, circus acts, offbeat fashion and "ballroom" dancing. This is the first time that San Francisco’s legendary Edwardian Ball will be transported to a festival. Be a part of it all – dress elegantly in Edwardian period attire, creative goth, stylish steampunk or beautifully bizarre costumes inspired by Edward Gorey. Join the co-hosts of The Edwardian Ball, avant-cabaret troupe, Vau de Vire Society, and the Pagan Lounge ensemble, Rosin Coven. Plus sonic evocateur Delachaux, dirty electro swing DJ Shakti Bliss, electric-shovel virtuoso Shovelman, The Klown Korps, Fou Fou Ha, exotic steam machinery by Kinetic Steam Works and an elaborate fashion show by Dark Garden Corsetry.
If you're trying to decide what to wear, for the winter Edwardian Ball, let the Edwardian Ball Roadshow, be a chance to window show and people watch as a source of inspiration. into the whimsical Edwardian world returning to SF and LA, Winter 2014. If you've always had the perfect steampunk summer and day wear that just wouldn't do for the night time winter Edwardian Ball, pull it out now and accessorize to make it last for five days (or load up your trunk with five days worth of finery). Yes, this is your opportunity to hold your own fashion show.
If you like Vau de Vire and need to escape from the Los Angeles smog, this weekend is just what the (witch) doctor ordered. Get the complete lineup by visiting SymbiosisGathering.com/lineup.
Symbiosis Gathering casts a wide net in drawing from the vibrant and artistic movement that the San Francisco Bay area is well known for and brings in sustainable initiatives and practices to the forefront of the festival experience. Measures include a reusable dish program in the dining area, a Zero Waste policy, procuring environmentally-friendly sources of energy and materials, and educating about sustainability through various educational workshops and activities.
"The foundation of this event is built around principles of ecological, global, and holistic awareness," noted Karen KoChen of Symbiosis Events. "Our team has brought together an eclectic program to bring these concepts to life in an interactive, co-creative, and highly innovative way."
Get out your Edwardian best, your thrillingly sultry corsetry or your steamiest punk paraphernalia and make reservations for this Oakdale event. You will leave five days older, but also five days wiser in an other worldly way unless you decide to skip all the classes. We'd advise taking the classes though. Who knows who you'll meet or what you'll learn and just what that might lead to? Don't we all need inspiration especially when you'll be heading back to the mundane daily life of Los Angeles traffic?
