Varsity Blues take the lead at CIS Swimming Championships Friday

According to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport website, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues have taken the lead in the men's standings at the 2012 Canadian Interuniversity Sport Swimming Championships at Calgary's University of Calgary Aquatic Centre on Friday.

The Varsity Blues entered Friday trailing first place University of British Columbia Thunderbirds by 13 points and the second place University of Calgary Dinos by five points.

However the University of Toronto took an eight point lead on the Thunderbirds Friday with 395 points after receiving victories from Mike Smerek in the men's 50m butterfly, Frank Despond in the men's 400m freestyle and Zach Chetrat in the men's 200m butterfly.

The Thunderbirds continue to lead the Dinos by 96.5 points in the women's standings.

Two more CIS Championship records fell on Friday. Kelly Aspinal of UBC set a record in the men's 100m backstroke with a time of 51.95 seconds and Caroline Lapierre-Lemire of the University of Quebec-Trois Rivieres Patriotes set a record in the women's 50m freestyle with a time of 24.87 seconds.

The CIS National Swimming Championship concludes Saturday.
