Two-year-old trotting sensation Vaporstar captured the $48,700 Cardinal at Balmoral Park on Nov.2 with Dave Magee driving for trainer Mike Brink.
The son of Vaporize-Starlicious was timed in 2:00.4, winning by eight and ½ lengths in his second lifetime victory. The giant youngster had won the $112,000 Lincoln Land Trot on Oct. 9 in a career best 1:57.4.
“Mike’s done a great job bringing Vaporstar around and taking his time with him,” said Magee. “He’s a big colt who really needed a little bit of teaching and patience early in his career and now that’s paying off in a big way. He’s really dominated his competition in these last two wins and he really seems to enjoy that.”
In the Cardinal, the front-stepping Vaporstar led at every post for owners Fox Valley Standardbreds of Sherman, IL and Harold D. and Joshua D. Carter of Williamsville, IL.
The victory pushed Vaporstar’s earnings to $88,946.
“He’s got a huge gait on him,” Brink offered. “But he’s very light on his feet and I think that’s probably what keeps him so sound. He’s never been lame a day and has always been a playful colt, but really didn’t take things seriously until last month."
Vaporstar has one more stake (a $10,000 ICF on Nov. 9 at Balmoral) before he’s retired for the season.
“He’ll go to Sherman, Illinois for the winter for a little rest and relaxation,” Brink confirmed.
