Concert goers will not find the Vans Warped Tour at the Nassau Coliseum this summer. The multi-stage music and extreme sports extravaganza has moved down the road a bit, to the Nikon at Jones Beach Amphitheatre in Wantagh. Why isn’t the Warped Tour returning to Uniondale? The answer is not so clear.
It could be that the chief skateboarders at Vans were simply wooed away from the Coliseum with a better deal at the shore. After all, the Nikon Theatre is a major tri-state area concert venue. Or maybe the warped bigwigs chose not to return for other reasons. Crowds have somewhat slacked off since the sprawling tour’s first visit to the local sports facility and exhibition hall back in 2008.
For Coliseum supporters though, it’s just another jab at their badly beaten but loyal carcasses. Renovation of their aging arena is set to begin sometime in 2015 which should last for about two years. Nobody knows if the Warped Tour will ever return to Uniondale. Murphy’s’ Law, maybe, but the historic and sometimes controversial home of the NY Islanders has had some bad luck recently.
Cancellations and postponements
The Warped Tour is not the only one fleeing town. The Isles are set to skip out for good after next hockey season. Then there is the boxing match between junior welter-weights Ruslan Provodnikov and Huntington’s Chris Algieri. The fight was originally scheduled to take place in June at the Coliseum; however, that was quickly nullified in favor of the Barclay’s Center.
Recently, Miley Cyrus postponed her April Coliseum gig for an August engagement. By the way, the drink maker Red Bull has not decided if the Coliseum will be part of the GRC racing circuit in July. So, add it all up and you have to wonder if the joint is jinxed. Let’s hope at least that the GRC falls in love with Nassau and vice versa.
Some warped appraisals
The Vans Warped Tour has provided quite a spectacle over the years. About last year’s Coliseum stint, according to one review posted on fakewalls.com, in spite of the rain, “crowds waited on line to see their favorite artists and check out new ones.” On concertaddicts.com , Katherine Pare wrote, “the quiet town of Uniondale, NY was transformed into a roaring festival for Warped Tour’s 17th run.”
Oh well, like Bogey and Bergman in Casablanca, instead of Paris, Coliseum goers will always have their memories.
