Today, the Vans US Open brought on less marker-riddled teens than before. Unfortunately, the unfavorable surf conditions would prove more permanent than the markers. Despite the slow heats and lulls between sets, the US Open of Surfing still proved entertaining.
Uninvited participants seemed to ambush the event. First, a Despicable Me cartoon minion blimp invaded during the Men's competition. Nat Young did not seem phased. He surfed well despite the blimp looming over him. He even produced an air. Next, a man in prison clothes with a giant Bible on wheels made an untimely appearance by standing in the water directly in front of the surfing event. Those two surf crashers seemed to entertain crowds between sets.
The lackluster swell was not the only upset of the day. Kohole Andino (19) bested former US Open winner, Julian Wilson. His familiarity with surfing Southern California made all the difference. Fans of Sally Fitzgibbons were astonished that she was not awarded a win in her heat against Pauline Ado. Sally performed well with a big opener and tail slides. Sally was not shy about sharing her disappointment in writing, “Some heats just don't turn out the way you see it!” Local, Conlogue definitely utilized her experience as she surfed through the pier pilings. Other stand outs included Carissa Moore and Bede Durbidge. Bianca Buitendag and Conner Coffin earned the title of Jr. Pro Champion.
Tomorrow is the last day of the US Open of Surfing. Crowds can anticipate less invasions and bamboozling. There will be a lot more action as Conlogue goes up against Wright and Moore against Ado in the Women's division. The Men's division has several strong powerhouse surfers vying for the win.
