As if on cue to celebrate Hollywood’s 125th birthday – and with more than a passing nod to American film’s “Golden Age,” the beginnings of which are chronicled in this year’s ‘The Artist’ sensation – the 18th annual Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue has arrived to the usual chorus of “no diversity” complaints.
For starters, this year it ignores almost half the population in one fell swoop. It’s all women!
The cover is the work of fashion photographer Mario Testino – a name you may remember from the Royal Engagement photos released in December 2010.
This year, the pre-Oscar tradition’s three-panel, fold-out cover showcases 11 Hollywood young lovelies – Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain (who snagged the coveted first panel exposure) and Elizabeth Olsen, Adepero Oduye, Shailene Woodley, Paula Patton, Felicity Jones, Lily Collins and Brit Marling (waiting beyond the fold) – in a highly-stylized, Jazz Age-ish fashion statement.
Some think the muted-hue satin evening gowns and decidedly unmuted hair and make-up styling pose a fashion question rather than a statement, but as we always say: to each her own!

What do you think? Is the “old school, over-the-top Hollywood glamor” set up a hit or a miss? Epic awesomesauce or a fell-flat-on-your-pretty-face fail?
You have to admit, though, the one-minute “making of” video for the 2012 Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue is pretty cool.
