Vanessa Carlton is a 'proud bisexual woman'

Musician Vanessa Carlton made a big annoucement this weekend while playing the Nashville Pride festival ... she's bisexual.

I've never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman.

There's no word so far on whether or not the statement was planned, but Vanessa is in good company, as quite a few celebrities have recently come out.

Anna Paquin, star of HBO's True Blood, came out as bisexual while she was filming a PSA, and it came as a shock to some.  Anna, however, said in the July issue of Self, that she's never been secretive about it to the people who are close to her.

I'm a very private person, but everyone who is in my life who matters to me always knows what's going on.  I understand why it's a big deal to some people, but to me, it's not ... I'm comfortable with who I am, and it's not an issue.

One of the most hyped recent "outings" was of country musician Chely Wright, who did things a little less demurely than Vanessa and Anna.  Chely's publicist started dropping hints weeks before her book, Like Me, officially came out.  Oh, and the "announcement" was made via a People interview, which is definitely a bold move.

Vanessa, Anna, and Chely are just a handful of the out and proud celebrities.  Ricky Martin, Ellen Degeneres (and wife Portia de Rossi), Neil Patrick Harris, Cynthia Nixon ... the list goes on.  They've come out in different ways, but thankfully they've all felt comfortable enough with themselves and their fans to make the big step.

The month of June was recently made the official LGBT Pride month by President Obama.  You can celebrate locally at the Houston Pride festival and parade, happening Saturday, June 26th in Montrose.
