Thomas Vanek netted his first goal as a New York Islander as his team downed the Boston Bruins 3-1 Saturday in New York. Vanek also added an assist and John Tavares and Andrew MacDonald each added goals.
Vanek had a 2-point night, getting the lone assist on Tavares’ goal. Travis Hamonic and Kyle Okposo also had 2-point nights. Each of them had two assists. It was a statement game against last year’s top team in the East.
Backup goalie Kevin Poulin got the win in net for the Islanders for his first of the season (1-2). Dougie Hamilton had the lone goal for the Bruins who had their backup goalie, Chad Johnson, in net.
The Islanders are in second place in the Metropolitan division and will play the Washington Capitals on the road Tuesday. The Capitals trail the Islanders in the division by just a point. The trip to Washington D.C. is the first road game of four. The team hosts Nashville on Nov. 12 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
