“ The 2010 Winter Olympic games were more than green Games, they set a new bar for large sporting events,” claims a report released by VANOC (Vancouver 2010 Olympic Organizing Committee) this week.
“We strived to make sustainability part of everything we did as an organization,” said VANOC’s CEO John Furlong. “We did our very best to reach our sustainability goals whenever and wherever possible.”
The final Sustainability report outlines 6 corporate sustainability objectives with examples of outcomes and legacies. The objectives include:
- Accountability
- Environmental Stewardship & Impact Reduction
- Social Inclusion and Responsibility
- Aboriginal Participation and Collaboration
- Economic Benefits
- Sport for Sustainable Living
This Sustainability Report represents VANOC’s self-reporting performance.
A more independent evaluation is being handled by UBC (University of BC) called The Olympic Games Impact (OGI) Study. This report will aim to “objectively measure and assign attribution to the potential effects of the Olympic and Paralympic Games on the host city, region and country, their environment and their citizens.”
