Elena Gilbert lost her one remaining connection to her humanity on the last episode. Jeremy Gilbert died, and in an effort to help her deal with that loss Damon used the sire bond. When he used it, he forced her to turn off human emotions. This will allow fans to see a completely different side to Elena Gilbert. This is not a 'Katherine 2.0' situation though. Stefan and Damon now have to figure out how to deal with a very different Elena Gilbert. Plec said the following about how the brothers handle Elena in the next episode:
"We find ourselves again with the brothers trying to figure out what the hell they’re going to do with her. 'Do we help her turn it back on? Do we leave it off? Do we lock her up? Do we hold her hand? Do we make her have fun? Do we send her back to school?' [They have] all these questions and frankly have no idea how to manage. That’s the first episode when we come back; it’s them figuring out, 'What do we do with her?'"
Plec also revealed that Caroline will also try to help Elena, but Elena won't want her help. This will cause more problems between the two. Caroline has been Team Stefan during all of Elena's relationship troubles after she became a vampire. This has caused a rift between the two, and that will only continue to grow.
Fans are buzzing about this series on social media. One fan said the following on Twitter recently:
