This CW series will return to its season one roots during season five. Fans can expect a darker series. This comes from Ian Somerhalder, who stars as Damon Salvatore on the series. He said the following, according to TV Guide:
This season we're really going back to what we had in Season 1, which is what sucked everyone in to begin with. Our director of photography is using light and darkness to paint the imagery of the story, really accentuating it and creating a mood that helps tell our story. This is a dark show.
As for the episodes to come, Kat Graham revealed in a new interview that the cast is already working on episode seven for the upcoming season, and fans can expect some big episodes ahead. This season is being teased as game-changing, and Kat Graham's comments are in line with that.
I’m actually really excited about this season! I just read Episode 7, which is really big. Episode 6 has been huge. I can’t really give away anything, but there’s going to be twists, turns, some doppelganger stuff, some vampire stuff, some witches and werewolves — it’s an amazing season!
Fans will see two doppelgangers this season. Katherine is back with a stronger presence, and Stefan now has Silas running around Mystic Falls. He is at the bottom of the lake at the start of the season.
"The Vampire Diaries" will return to CW on Oct. 3.
