‘Vampire Diaries’ star Daniel Gillies signs on for ‘The Originals’ (Photos)

Daniel Gillies is will be joining Joseph Morgan and Phoebe Tonkin in the “Vampire Diaries” spin off “The Originals” (Hollywood Reporter, Jan 22) if the show is picked up by CW.

Gillies plays Elijah, the only-mean-when-he has-to-be vamp brother of Klaus (Morgan) on “TVD.” The brothers, along with Rebekah, Kol and Finn are the “Original” vampires, meaning they have been around for a little while. During the pilot episode set to air in April 25, Klaus returns to the French Quarter, a “melting pot” of supernaturals that he helped build some time ago. Werewolf Hayley will also be making the move, however all of the who’s, what’s, when’s, and why’s haven’t been released yet.

No word on whether or not Rebekah will be joining her siblings in New Orleans or if she will stay behind in Mystic Falls with a certain younger Salvator brother.

“TVD” and “The Originals” play second fiddle to Gillies main gig, he also stars in CTV’s “Saving Hope” as Dr. Joel Goran. However, we are told that there will not be a conflict with scheduling.

Fans have taken to Twitter to voice their approval : “Daniel Gillies confirmed as a lead for the #TVD spin-off is like the best news I've heard all day. My favorite Original!” Gillies biggest fan, wife Rachel Leigh Cook tweeted “So proud of my Mr!”

Gillies tweeted a simple “thank you”
