July 12, 2011 - Cast members of The Vampire Diaries have posted the first on-set photo from the start of season 3 shooting.
Matt Davis, who plays Alaric on the show, tweeted a photo of Nina Dobrev on the set of show as they began shooting for season 3. At first look, the photo doesn't give much away, however when going back to a recent interview Julie Plec did with TV Guide, it is easy to guess what scenes the image is from.

According to Julie, the season 3 premiere begins with Elena's 18th birthday celebration, so it is safe to assume that Nina's look on the photo is because she's all dolled up for her special day.
Nina, or Elena, is wearing a red corset-like tank top and has her hair up in a bun. This look could also mark the fact that Elena is now an adult, so she may start wearing more "grown-up" outfits on this season.
Not that there is nothing wrong with her casual jeans and sneakers look, but they may use this new look to signal the start of her adulthood.

Other guesses, like MTV's take on Nina's look, are that maybe she is going through a crazy, identity crisis now that Stefan (Paul Wesley) is out there ripping humans' throats, or that the kiss with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) awakened her sultry side...
While we will not know for sure until the actual premiere, it's always fun to speculate and try to figure out what we can expect in September. As we know, anything is possible with The Vampire Diaries, and no crazy guess could ever be too far off.

Meanwhile, Julie did give us a couple more hints on season 3, such as the announcement of a new character, which could be temporary or permanent, named Rebecca.
The executive producer also said that we will see Nina's "deep, deep attraction toward Damon" grow and become a big problem for her as she struggles with her guilt about Stefan.
