Valve in talks for Half-Life and Portal movies

JJ Abrams and Gabe Newell revealed during their DICE 2013 discussion that they are in talks to create film adaptations of Half-Life and Portal. Hollywood director Abrams is also currently working with Valve on a game project.

Director of Star Trek and Star Wars Episode VII, Abrams said regarding the proposed movies "It's as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets. Which is that we are talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas.

"We're also aware of the cautionary tales of moves that became games and vice versa," he continued. "Our goal here is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script - just to treat it with the respect they treat their games and players with."

Elaborating on the game project, Abrams added: "We've had so many meetings and finally got to the point where we said, 'We need to start making stuff.' and so the ideas that we've had for games, the ideas they've had for turning Portal and Half-Life into a film, we just decided we actually have to start doing this stuff."

Newell has stated that, after a series of conversations with Abrams, they "reached the point that we decided to do more than talk.
