Chillicothe, Texas is a small spot along the empty Texas highway between Dallas and Amarillo and has, until the last few years, been known to travelers as a speed trap. But luckily, Valley Pecans has given Chillicothe a name worth stopping for.
Known for its “Dang Good Candy”, Valley Pecans is the perfect rest stop along highway 287. It’s not only a clean pit stop, but also a great place to shop and get some tasty treats.
Owners, Mike and Kelli Baustert began selling bags of pecans out of their pickup truck back in 1998 and have since developed their company into a full-fledged shop of gifts, gadgets, décor, and of course, lots of pecans.
Shop though bags of flavorful pecans from the pure nut to dark chocolate or praline covered. A half-pound bag runs about $6.95 and sugar-free bags $7.95. Grab a bag for snacking on the road, but also a divided tray of four to six flavors and a burlap bag-full as a gift.
Valley Pecans has their own orchards in Chillicothe, so all their nuts are Texas bred and raised. Texas love, sun, and soil combine to grow some of the best tasting pecans around.
While pecans are the focus here, other treats include homemade fudge, jars of jams and salsas, and even a selection of Texas wines.
It’s easy to spend a good thirty minutes or more looking around at the fun collection of gifts, from bags, to cookware and pillows, to Watkins lip balm and creams. And, if you’ve ever needed a good Texas cookbook, you’ll likely find it here.
Stop in and stay a while.
Valley Pecans is open most every day of the year at 1001 HWY 287, 940-852-5957. Don’t worry about missing it, Chillicothe isn’t that big and it’s on the north side of the highway with big signs out front inviting you in to try their nuts. If the store happens to be closed when you're driving thorugh, visit their "24/7 YUM Machine", a vending machine out front, loaded with lots of their "Dang Good Stuff."
If Valley Pecans isn’t on your road map, then look them up online at www.valleypecans.com.
