Valley Metro Notes - Interview with Captain Squeegee

I had the chance to interview Ryan and Danny from Captain Squeegee who are part of the Valley Metro Notes program.  The program was started to get local bands to write "schoolhouse rock" type songs to inform the public about transportation opportunities available to them.  Captain Squeegee wrote “Be Courteous” which is available now on the Metro Notes website.

What's your name and what do you play in the band?

RYAN: My name is Ryan, and I play the trombone, synthesizer/effects, and some percussion. Oh, and I sing a little too.

DANNY: I am Danny. I am singer. I play trumpet too.

How long have you been in the band?

RYAN: I've played with some of the guys for ten years. That makes me feel old, but then again we were just kids when we started. I have been with squeegee for about eight or nine years, I think. I'm not very good with numbers.

DANNY: Physically I have been with the band for almost 9 years. But spiritually, I have been preparing for this band through many lifetimes.

Why do you think it's important that people are properly instructed on how to utilize Phoenix's public transportation system?

RYAN: The reasons to familiarize oneself with public transit are numerous and profound, and I am very serious when I say this. A large metropolitan city operates, in many ways, like an organism. But unlike a typical organism, a city is filled with conscious, decision-making agents, that tend to base their actions upon self-interest. This is not bad in itself, but there are some facet's of one's own self interest of which we are not aware in routine decision-making. Utilizing public transit is very much in the interest of the individual, because of its benefits for the whole city. Fewer traffic jams, less noise pollution, fewer injuries and deaths due to automobiles, and LESS POLLUTION are just a few that come to mind. We the inhabitants of this city, this organism, need to stop discounting the known future costs of driving our cars and trucks, and acknowledge that it is in each of our individual interests to use a system that will better foster the long term health and efficiency of our organism.

DANNY: Earth's clock is ticking away. It's pretty obvious that the planetary alarm has started going off, but we have continued to click the "snooze" button. This Valley Metro Notes project is an attempt to enlighten the masses & their vision of transit. As a community we music join together in song and begin our transition into the futuristic utopia we were destined to be... and that starts with smarter transit.

What did you take away from being involved in this project?

RYAN: A fun experience with recording in a different environment. All of the people involved were very pleasant, and friendly. It was fun.
DANNY: A feeling of public service... and a check! :-)

How often do you utilize Phoenix's public transportation?

RYAN: I ride the light rail whenever I am drinking in Tempe. This happens quite frequently, and my destination is conveniently located near a station. When I attended Arizona State, I rode the rail every day.
DANNY: When my room-mate finally gets sick of me borrowing his car, I'm sure I'll be riding the light rail much more frequently.

Any last words?

DANNY: Shamanism
