The controversial company that wants to open a horse slaughterhouse in Roswell, New Mexico, is still in the fight. This time Rick De Los Santos and his Valley Meat Company appeared in another court hearing on October 22 to land a consequential permit.
This hearing took place at the Chaves County Courthouse on Tuesday and carried over to Wednesday. De Los Santos is seeking to renew his company’s wastewater permit.
Many people who are vehemently opposed to the slaughterhouse in their community and a horse slaughterhouse in principle have been staging protests at the courthouse for over a week.
De Los Santos said,
This is a big deal. People think it's something small. It's not. It's huge, it's nationwide. It really is.
The hearing continued Wednesday and provided time for the public to comment. It is expected that any decision coming from the judge will take weeks.
De Los Santos has already said that if he does not get this wastewater permit, Valley Meat will haul of their waste on trucks instead.
Time will tell this story.
