Lucerne, CA - I will preface this story with an apology and a warning for the graphic photos which are included. This story is horrific and the photos are disturbing.
Valentine is just 10 months of age and she has already seen, and survived, the worst that mankind has to offer.
Days ago, she somehow limped her battered and broken body into a cement plant in Lucerne - the condition of her mangled body shocked the workers who spotted her.
Before their eyes stood a Pit bull puppy who had been so horribly abused that it seemed implausible that she was alive.
Hanging from just skin, was a destroyed paw.
Her eye was bloodied from what appears to be the impact from a heavy object.
Electrical tape bound her mouth shut.
Many of her teeth have been knocked out.
Her stomach held only rocks and dirt that she consumed before her mouth was taped shut.
Her pain from these injuries is undoubtedly tremendous - more than anyone could possibly wrap their head around.
According to Sherree with Sounds of Silent Spirits Rescue, those who found Valentine initially feared that she was the target of dog-fighters. But a closer examination of her wounds revealed no dog bites.
Valentine's abuse came directly from the hand of a heartless human.
Right now, this battered Pit bull puppy is recovering at the Bear Valley Animal Hospital.
I spoke with the clinic this afternoon and she is doing surprisingly well, despite her grievous injuries. One paw has already been amputated and the other paw may be lost as well - it has been crushed.
She is currently on IV fluids, antibiotics and pain medication to help keep her comfortable.
This is a story of incredible animal cruelty, but it is also a rescue story - a survival story.
Valentine's abusers intended for her to die - yet she survived.
Somehow, despite a crushed foot and a paw that was dangling by just skin, she managed to make her way to people who could help.
Amazingly, despite the horror that she has survived, she remains sweet - she still has it in her heart to wag her tail and welcome the touch of humans.
Valentine is safe now.
She has a long road to recovery ahead of her and demons which will need to be buried, but she has time - she is young and there is still time to show her the love and kindness that she deserves.
Individuals interested in contributing towards her care can do so by phoning the Bear Valley Animal Hospital directly at (760) 240-5228.
