Now that Valentine’s Day has come and gone, I thought it would be interesting to explore search trends over the past year compared to the previous year.
Comparing 2013 and 2012 side-by-side, there isn’t much difference in search terms. “gifts for him” remained the top searched term on Google, with other familiar terms revolving around gift ideas and gift ideas for men making up the rest of the top 10, which can be a good indicator for advertisers to aggressively market male gifts for Valentine’s day next year.
However, what’s interesting to look at are the rising search trends for the infamous Hallmark holiday 2013 and 2012.
When you look at 2012, rising search trends are focused around homemade gift ideas for Valentine’s Day. However, when you look at 2013’s rising search trends, search queries focus on gift ideas for men. When comparing 2013 to 2012, there is an obvious transition from homemade gifts to purchased gifts. As the economy recovers you might expect the trend to continue in 2014.
Will we see a continued increase in search terms for Valentine’s Day gifts for men or will homemade Valentine’s Day gifts make a return to the rising search terms in 2014? Stay tuned.
