Valentine's Day placemat

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and Bangor area families are looking for ways to decorate their homes for the holiday. Making Valentine’s Day placemats is a fun family activity and the mats will be a nice table decoration.

Materials:

Many of the materials needed for this craft may be available at home. Any of the other materials can be purchased at the Bangor A.C. Moore store. The materials needed for this craft are:

Red and pink construction paper

Heart shaped doilies

Scissors

Glue

Purple marker

Pencil

Contact paper

Newspaper

Directions:

Valentine’s Day placemats are easy to make. Pick a work area and cover it with newspaper. This will make cleanup easier. Gather all other materials and place them onto the work area.

  • Choose the red or pink paper for the background. Lay the doilies onto the background paper in any layout you choose. Make sure they fit onto the paper. When the doilies are in the preferred position, glue them in place.
  • Use the pencil to draw heart shapes onto the other sheet of construction paper. Make sure the hearts are small enough to fit in the center of the doilies. Cut the hearts from the paper and glue them to the middle of the doilies. Let the glue dry.
  • Using the purple marker, write Valentine’s Day messages on the construction paper hearts. Message ideas include; “I Love You”, “Be Mine” and “Happy Valentine’s Day”.  When the place mat is finished, cover both sides with contact paper. Trim the contact paper till it is close to the edge of the mat.
