Mayor Dennis Phillips of Kingsport, Tenn., made an official proclamation Friday that Valentine's Day would be extended through the entire weekend. According to a Feb. 14 article on the, the weekend is being dubbed "Sweetheart Weekend." The mayors from neighboring cities, Johnson City and Bristol, have joined in agreement with corresponding proclamations for their citizens.

The winter storm Smochi hit the Tri-Cities area hard, and a large portion of the residents were trapped at home through the normally busy retail holiday. So, this move encourages folks in Kingsport and beyond to take this weekend to honor the special sweethearts in their lives and support area businesses at the same time.

The idea of a weekend-long Valentine's celebration is a great idea because there are always those whose work schedule prevents their enjoying the special evening with their loved ones. Having all weekend to celebrate allows everyone to make the most of the Valentine holiday.

Some stores have already reduced the prices on their Valentine gifts and candy, so there is always that side benefit, too!
