With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I feel compelled as a dating columnist to hammer out as many articles as possible. Feeling a twinge of writer’s block, I started asking friends what types of articles they’d be interested in reading that related to the holiday and even posed the question to my parents.
While having dinner with my mother and father I lamented that my school semester was starting right on the heels of V. Day and I wanted to be able to write a fair amount of articles on the subject before the 14th. My dad—warmed by his signature scotch on the rocks with a splash of water and a twist—immediately recycled a Christmas quote by the character Ebenezer Scrooge to describe the holiday, saying, “Valentine’s Day is a poor excuse to pick a man’s pocket…” etc. etc…
“I just need ideas for articles and this is the one holiday based on love and dating and stuff,” I said.
“Ok, listen, you know what Valentine’s Day is for?” posited my father. “If you’re really in love with someone, Valentine’s Day is a great day to ask that person to marry you. And then, if that person doesn’t say yes, you’re free! You’re finally free and it’s like you’ve won the Super bowl!”
My mother—the woman my father has been married to for over 35 years—immediately burst into a cacophony of giggles as a response to this and then resumed eating her plate of stir fry.
That’s my father’s input on Valentine’s Day. What’s yours? Leave your thoughts, questions, concerns and zingers in the comments section below.
