Valentine’s Day 2014 is only a few days away and while coming up with a Valentine’s Day gift idea for a woman is not too difficult, knowing what to get a man for a Valentine’s Day gift can be the ultimate challenge. “Men dread Valentine's Day. Or not. It seems men expect nearly $230 to be spent on them on the day of hearts and flowers, while women expect gifts totaling just $196,” reported Main Street on Feb. 5, 2014.

Valentine's Day 2014 is on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014. Is it really possible that men would want more for Valentine’s Day than women?

Unlike women, most men care very little for traditional Valentine’s Day gifts like flowers, chocolates, jewelry, or going out to a restaurant.

When one man was asked what he would give his lady as a Valentine’s Day gift, he answered, “I'll get her a new shop vacuum, and take her to dinner at Taco Bell.”

Even though the man’s response was meant as a joke, it provided quite an insight into what many men really want for Valentine’s Day – something useful and something efficient.

The challenge with coming up for a great Valentine’s Day gift for a man is that men and women see a difference in what is considered to be “useful” or “efficient.”

Some websites recommend giving a man a gift certificate or tickets to a sports event or concert for Valentine’s Day. While some men might welcome such a Valentine’s Day gift and consider it to be useful and efficient, other men might consider it to be a woman’s message for him to get out of the house more.

Similarly, buying clothes, ties, books, cologne, or even a tool for a man is only a treasured Valentine’s Day gift if a man will find it useful and efficient.

Apparently, the one Valentine’s Day gift that most men consider to be useful and efficient is having “some great moments.”

A survey of 1,000 adults in 49 states conducted by Relationship Science Month, Monmouth University Professor Gary W. Lewandowski, Haverford College Professor Benjamin Le, and University of Texas Professor Timothy J. Loving showed that when it comes down to the most precious gift for men on Valentine’s Day, it is about love.

“Women love Valentine's Day more than men do, while men hate it more than women do. Women love it because it’s an opportunity to receive love and affection. Men love it because they get to have sex, but not just any kind of sex, better than normal sex.”

Men do consider an intimate time to be “efficient” and “useful,” and there is no limit as to the variety of Valentine’s Day gift ideas for men in that area.

From lingerie, to enhancing products, to massages, to massage oils, to board games (yes, there are some amazing intimate and fun board games available), to taking a man to a men’s strip club (to watch the women go crazy), there is something available for every man.

Certainly, not every man is the same when it comes to the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. However, remembering that men like something useful and efficient, and that Valentine’s Day is about love, might help in coming up with a surprising and memorable gift. As many men might say -- “if you love me, give me something that I love.”
