Next Tuesday, the 14th, Valentine’s Day rolls around again. The holiday that celebrates love by exchanging candy and gifts.
The celebration of Valentine’s Day comes from Bishop Valentine. Bishop Valentine was a priest living in Rome during the rule of “Claudius the Cruel”. When the Emperor did not believe in Roman Soldiers marrying, Bishop Valentine would marry the couples in secrecy, and for this he was imprisoned.
While there, he converted his inmates to Christianity, which led to Claudius to order his execution. When imprisoned, he became friends with Claudius’ daughter. He would send her letters that were signed, “From your Valentine”.
After Bishop Valentine’s death, Valentine’s Day was celebrated by passing notes of love and affection. Later on, this included gifts and candy as in our current Valentine’s Day celebration.
