E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park, in Louisville, will host two Valentine-themed events the weekend of February 8-9, 2014.

On Saturday, “Tom”’ Sawyer will conduct a Sweetheart Wreath Workshop from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the activities building. The park naturalist will show participants how to turn natural materials found in the park, such as invasive honeysuckle vines, and turn them into treasures.

The fee for this workshop is $10.00 per couple or $7.00 for individuals; reservations are required. The park will provide all materials needed to create the wreaths but individuals may bring other items to add to the piece.

On Sunday, “Tom”’ Sawyer invited everyone to take part in a Sweethearts’ Hike from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. This guided hike will leave from the Sawyer-Hayes Community Center and will follow the Goose Creek Nature Trail. Participants should bring binoculars to make spotting whitetail deer and song birds easier.

The fee for the Sweethearts’ Hike is $5.00 per couple or $3.00 for singles. Pre-registration is not required.

For more information about these events or to register for the wreath making workshop, call the park at (502) 429-7270.

As the only state park within Metro Louisville, E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park is an oasis in the urban landscape.

The 580-acre park was once a farm worked by the former Central State Hospital, a mental health facility. Many remnants, such as barns and cemeteries, still remain on park property.

Recreational facilities at the park include hiking and fitness trails, an outdoor swimming pool, indoor gym, lacrosse and soccer fields, softball fields, archery range, and a BMX track. The Sawyer Hayes Community Center is available for group meetings and can be reserved by calling the park.

Located in eastern Jefferson County between Westport Road and LaGrange Road on Freys Hill Road, the park is convenient to the residents of Louisville and surrounding counties and easily found using Google Maps.
