Vagabond Acting Troupe tops Philadelphia hot list

If you live in southern Berks County, and are constantly on the lookout for worthwhile, family-friendly entertainment, or simply something for your kids to do, look no further than The Vagabond Acting Troupe.

Recently named in the Top Five for Children’s Entertainment in the Philly Hot List, the Vagabond Acting Troupe (VAT) has been active in Southeastern Pennsylvania since 1995. Sponsored by Tribune Broadcasting station PHL17, the awards were given based on the number of votes received. Although the Philadelphia Zoo earned the number one spot, VAT ranked higher than both Camden’s Adventure Aquarium and Philadelphia’s Sesame Place.

While in the past, VAT was primarily a traveling troupe, the company has now established a home at the Corner Arts Center in Honey Brook, Pa. The theatre was recently renovated with new seating, lights and sound equipment, and the company has plans for continuing renovation into the future.

Located just 15 minutes south of the Morgantown exit of the Pa. Turnpike, the new theatre is a welcome addition to the community, as there were previously no other performing arts outlets in the immediate area.

The troupe provides theatrical and musical productions and workshops, led by highly respected Artistic Director Aileen McCullouch. Adult shows are also in production planning, and Dutch Blitzkrieg Comedy Improv Troupe performs their “Whose Line Is It Anyway” style improv shows on a regular basis.

On Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m., enjoy the family friendly “A Year with Frog and Toad.” This Teen Musical Theater Workshop production also plays on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Noon. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Sorry if you don’t already have tickets, but the special January 25 performance for the Twin Valley Reading Is Fundamental program has already sold out.

Locally famous for her skill in teaching Shakespeare, McCullouch hosts “Macbeth Classical Theatre Workshop” on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, February 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8/$10 in advance, $12/$15 at the door.

Finally, get ready for an evening of sweets and treats on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m., as VAT Showstoppers presents “Sweet Desserts,” during their annual Valentine’s Performance. Share delicious delicacies and love songs, and celebrate your love. Dessert is included, so you’ll want to get your $10 tickets in advance; or just pay $15 at the door.
